Rose Humphries
Rose Humphries creates visually dynamic work that does not focus on depicting the world realistically. Rather, her paintings and drawings are gestural and expressionistic. They live in a world of their own; one that is more twisted and not what it seems. Humphries’ work is garish and leans towards the dark with a fascination in ‘the interesting’ over ‘conventionally pretty.’ This leads Humphries’ work to have an element of caricature and narrative through exaggerated features and visually compelling poses.
Humphries considers herself to have a drawing and painting practice that are synonymous with each other. She predominantly uses charcoal, ink, conte, and oil paint. Her art making process is spontaneous and reactionary. Meaning Humphries does not do much preplanning before starting a piece; rather, she decides one aspect that she wants to be a focus for the work and allows her hands to respond to what the piece calls for. She allows herself to experiment with “strange” color palettes, bringing bright colors to counterbalance the muted, desaturated tones of the rest of the piece.
Rose Humphries’ loose, gestural mark making allows the viewer to be taken into an entrancing world, inviting them to stop and ponder their own relation to the world and what is considered “conventional.”
