Lachlan Howard
Lachlan Howard, studying Sculpture + Expanded Media, creates 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional, and performance artwork. He uses everything from digital tools to hands-on processes like felting, woodworking, and photo/video, and many more to push the boundaries and expectations of his viewers. Many of his pieces feature strange, organic shapes paired with highly saturated, eye-catching colors. They pull you in right away, but the more you look, the stranger things start to feel. Incorporating familiar forms, he pushes and pulls from reality, making the subject of his work completely unique. Lachlan is interested in how and why we become uneasy while looking at certain things, so he experiments with making his viewers uncomfortable, asking them to reflect on what they are seeing and feeling. His works made for Permission to Party explore the idea of office satire, using exaggerated tropes and surreal elements to poke fun at corporate culture and mundane routines. Lachlan’s use of humor not only connects the viewer emotionally, but it is intended to raise questions about the systems and environments we have become accustomed to.
