Jaela Pickerton
Jaela uses comedy in her work as a porous boundary that allows the conversation to flow into what we choose to make comedic about a disruptive world. She works on paper and uses liquid mediums like watercolor and gouache in tandem with collage. This helps communicate the transparency of societal issues in the media. Her work also discusses gender roles and how they are apparent in the media we consume for pure enjoyment, although it highlights the current state of this world.
She works on a smaller scale to create a sense of intimatacy with the viewer and to propose the question of what is really going on behind the scenes. Taking inspiration from film itself, the absent and distinct facial expressions describe a lot throughout her work. While choosing the emotion the audience is perceiving, she directs the viewer to think about what is being shown and what isn’t.
