Grace Stoner - porcelain vase with underglaze, 2026

I wanted to connect the early consumerism around Chinese porcelain in Europe with the contemporary viral meme of doge. It is interesting to see how this particular image of a dog has transformed meaning and forms to stay relevant for over a decade, as well as its subsequent death once appropriated into the US government by Elon Musk. I want to explore this correlation between the political gain by Meissen’s porcelain production in the 18th century, being the first manufacturer for “true” hard-paste porcelain like the Chinese imports, and the use of internet culture for political interest in the 21st century. I took “business in the front, party in the back” literally, placing the doge on only one side of the vase.
