By juxtaposing Basket of Fruit by Caravaggio with a contemporary and mildly viral image of a cat (fatfatmillycat on Instagram), this piece becomes a silly critique on the sanctity of old masters’ artwork and the institution of fine art being used as oppressive rhetoric. To me, the cat image chosen portrays silliness and jest, poking fun at the viewer and the subject matter in the foreground. There is an instant sense of unseriousness that the viewer gets from this piecebecause of the jarring contrast in tone between the background and foreground.
