Have Your Cake and Eat It

Everson Brooks - watercolor, acrylic on paper, 2026

My style is quite influenced by Mannerist painters and the ideals of the classical nude. Have Your Cake And Eat It references these luxurious scenes with reclining naked bodies typical of a traditional art museum, with a twist that simultaneously calls to mind Holbein’s The Ambassadors and the works of Wayne Thiebauld, as well as contemporary euphemistic slang. The slice of cake both conceals and emphasizes the figure’s nudity, evoking the double standard of modesty and voyeurism prevalent in older generations of society and the art world.
