Curtis Conway

Curtis’ work is an exploration of textiles through the use of figure and humor. Curtis uses the medium of sewing as a way to repair objects and give them a new life. Sewing is a way to explore the figure and depict humans in a non-confrontational way. Humor is used in this through the personality of Curtis’ sculptures, and the fabrics that are used.

Curtis also works in photo and video, and finds it daunting to take photos of people. In using sculpture Curtis can dress their sculptures like people, pose them, and put them in situations similar to people. Figures have been a prominent component in Curtis’ work and across different media, depicting people is evident.

Across history, people have been in turmoil amongst each other. Humor is a way to confront uncomfortable topics whilst maintaining a lighthearted mood. Within our contemporary landscape, there is a common use of memes and humor devices to cope with politics and current events. Curtis identifies with this, citing that humor is an essential part of their work.
