Ash Olszewski
Ashley Olszewski’s art deals with food and people’s relationship to it, and how that relationship can affect their lives. Her work uses close-ups of food, providing a layer of abstraction. That confusion of space allows the viewer to contemplate how the paint makes them feel. Olszewski explores multiple perspectives on food, portraying the good and the bad. Using bright colors, like those on desserts, gives off a brighter, more positive view of the food, while using darker, earthy tones comes off unappetizing and molded.
In her practice, Olszewski uses acrylic paint with a palette knife, along with watercolor and gouache. Working with a pallet knife helps abstract the work by not allowing the fine detail work of brushes, instead helping to build texture. The three-dimensionality of the paint forces the viewers to notice the surface of the work and reflect on how it makes them feel.
