Amelia Vinson

Amelia Vinson, a double major in drawing and painting, gifted me a yellow pendant she sculpted into a portrait of a Belgian Malinois. Her consideration of my love of outfit details is reflected in the consideration of delicate details in her craftsmanship. Amelia’s work has been an exploration of material, time, and relationships. She associates people and memories with objects such as fabric or jewelry, and visually connects them in her pieces. Starting with found fabrics, she selects and draws inspiration from their connotations and connects them with the subjects of her source photographs. Favoring late 19th -century to early 20th-century aesthetics and film photography, she has acquired an extensive collection of photos to choose from. She prefers to draw from pre-digital photography because the process of developing film represents the feelings of connection she depicts. This subtle intimacy, appreciation for mementos, and her material handling create a soft seriousness in Amelia’s work. Her work with oil paints often has a muted, hazy blending effect that further pushes this aesthetic. However, she subverts this expectation in many pieces, using vibrant colors and playing with ink and acrylic paint. Found material, attention to detail, color, and associations with history and memory are vital aspects of her many artworks
